Periodontal disease is an infection of the structures that support the teeth, which include the gums, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. Disease is widespread among population and usually evolves through stages. It starts with an inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis. As the disease progresses it can lead to significant bone loss, mobility of the teeth and in terminal stage the teeth are lost.

Early detection and prevention of complications is the key in controlling the periodontal disease. Symptoms include red, swollen, sore or bleeding gums, receding gum line, mouth sores, presence of pus and foul odor in the mouth, loose teeth etc. All of our patients are screened for presence of signs and symptoms of periodontal disease. Proper education, oral hygiene instructions, elimination of risk factors and regular dental visits can largely decrease the incidence of developing a periodontal disease.

After complete periodontal evaluation, individualized treatment plan is set and presented to every patient. Often times battle with periodontal disease can be lifelong. Combination of primary preventive therapy with periodic “deep” cleanings (scaling and root planing) can control the progression of the disease for many years. In certain cases surgical periodontal therapy might be indicated, as a tertiary way of treating the disease with gum disease specialists.
